Sharapova, Serena into 3rd round at Aussie Open

Other seeds to advance were: No. 21 and former Aussie Open runner-up Ana Ivanovic, who upended Michaella Krajicek, 6-2, 6-3, and No. 30 Angelique Kerber, a 7-5, 6-1 winner over Stephanie Dubois.

A pair of lower seeds fell early Thursday, as Ekaterina Makarova ousted Kaia Kanepi (25), 6-2, 7-5, and Sara Errani eliminated Nadia Petrova (29), 6-2, 6-2.
